Industry Wellness

Trucking Wellness, an initiative of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), is a primary healthcare delivery programme dedicated to the wellness of those employed in the road freight and logistics (RFL) industry. The programme is a sterling example of a successful and sustainable public-private partnership in that it is funded by the NBCRFLI together with various partners who share the Council’s vision of fighting the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the RFL industry. It has continued to experience year-on-year success since its inception. Through the Programme, many lives continue to be saved and improved.

Trucking Wellness (previously known as Trucking Against AIDS) was launched in 1999 by the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight Industry (NBCRFI) to create awareness around HIV&AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) amongst long-distance truck drivers, commercial sex workers and those at risk such as driver spouses and partners.

The Trucking Wellness Offering

Trucking Wellness is a value-add health service offered by Council to members of the Industry as well as those in surrounding communities. Over the years it has evolved into providing a holistic approach to health and wellness which encompasses a wide range of free primary health care services, including:

  • Condom distribution.
  • STI diagnosing, treatment and education.
  • HIV awareness, information, education, counselling and testing.
  • Referrals to appropriate service providers for ART as well as HIV and AIDS treatment and care.
  • TB awareness, information, education, screening and referrals for treatment and care.
  • Malaria awareness, information, education, screening and referrals for treatment and care.
  • Screening tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and body mass index.
  • Diagnosis, treatment, care and support of any primary care health problem or concern.

These services are offered through a blend of 5 mobile Wellness Clinics and 22 fixed Wellness Centres staffed by registered nurses and counsellors and situated on all major trucking routes. The clinics are funded by the NBCRFLI and supported by donor organisations, industry partners, local government and relevant health departments.

ARV Programme

Over the years, the Council’s Trucking Wellness Programme has worked successfully together with Affinity to deliver sustainable HIV solutions by managing HIV/AIDS in the workplace and by treating HIV-positive people. The experienced Trucking Wellness counselors support and educate patients and their families about HIV, and related diseases, provide HIV/AIDS counseling and, where necessary, ARV treatment to HIV-infected employee members of the NBCRFLI.

The NBCRFLI strives to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS effectively:

  • By encouraging that those who test HIV negative remain negative.
  • By keeping those who test HIV-positive healthy and productive for as long as possible.
  • By positively influencing attitudes to breakdown stigma surrounding the disease.
